Nurse Practitioner - Surgical Program

Position Summary:

The Surgical Program Nurse Practitioner (Surgical NP) is a collaborative role that operates to support clients admitted to the acute care service, and in clinic settings, under the surgeons at Timmins and District Hospital (TADH). As the NP your practice will include management of acute care and longer-term care adult clients admitted and managed by the surgeons. You will work collaboratively with the surgeons, nursing teams, and the interdisciplinary team to optimize the client experience. Practicing with to full NP scope of practice by diagnosing, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medication and assist with admission, management and discharge of clients in their hospital journey with the CNO Standards of Practice; Nurse Practitioners and policies of TADH. This position will also be considered as a Grown Your Own NP role, to support RNs who have been accepted into an NP Program, or who are currently enrolled in an NP Program.            

Position Responsibilities:

 

  • Specific responsibilities include; completion of medication reconciliation, liaising with the surgical floor nurses, ordering and interpreting tests and completing treatment/referrals as necessary for post op and pre op patients,  completing/assisting with admission of surgical patients and consents for surgery, discharge summaries and prescriptions, streamlining discharges, liaising between the hospital and home services/LTC, assisting with wound care as needed, rounding on inpatients with and without surgeons, charting rounds notes, and completing specific inpatient procedures with surgeon mentorship.
  • Provide admission support from ED and coverage of locum physician patients, as required, enhancing continuity of care.
  • ·       Provide comprehensive client care using advanced assessment skills and sound knowledge of clinical therapeutics.
  • Direct, provide and evaluate as holistic client care based on advanced nursing and surgical/medical management knowledge and skills.
  • Perform and document comprehensive client assessments based on thorough history taking and physical examination.
  • Identify and analyze client’s physical and psychological health care problems.
  • Develop plan of care in collaboration with the Surgeons, nurses and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Identify health education needs of clients and families independently or in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Identify order and prioritize appropriate diagnostic test and procedures.
  • Interpret laboratory/radiology and other test results.
  • Communicate with and interpret to clients/families and community health care members diagnosis, treatment plan, and related implications.
  • Accurately document assessment, plan, intervention, and evaluation of client/family responses in hospital chart.
  • Liaise with staff regarding clients to communicate information and facilitate follow up care and treatment.
  • Direct referrals to the appropriate health care professionals or services.
  • Provide individual counselling/instruction to facilitate client/family understanding of specific health and life style risk factors.
  • Assist individuals and families in coping with surgical care, illness/disability and treatment plan by guiding and supporting while providing an environment that promotes independence.
  • Assist with admission, management and discharge of clients in their hospital journey.
  • Capture relevant and required data as defined by the Ontario Health, HQO, Accreditation or other quality improvement strategies.

 

Position Requirements:  

  • Completion of accredited post BScN, Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Graduate of M.Sc.N/G.Dip Nurse Practitioner Program (NP) or equivalent NP program.
  • Grow Your Own Option: Successful acceptance into a M.Sc.N/G.Dip NP Program, and/or currently enrolled in M.Sc.N/G.Dip NP Program, will be eligible for financial support, with a return of service at Timmins and District Hospital.
  • Experience working as an NP in acute care surgical program considered an asset.
  • Registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario.
  • Experience in program development and education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evidence based practices.
  • Effective time management and ability to prioritize workload.
  • Must possess the ability to work with minimal supervision and must follow standardized procedures.
  • Should be adaptable to cope with changing contacts with people, situations and conditions.
  • Must have employment history which demonstrates regular attendance at work.
  • ·       Must possess the ability to provide effective services to clients/patients in both English and French. Individuals who do not meet the language requirements of this posting are invited to submit their résumé for consideration.

  • Starting salary of $60.99/hour; $118,930.50/year (As per Step 1 of the ONA collective agreement.)
  • Option to enroll into Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan.
