POSITION SUMMARY:
This position follows a Mill Line of Progression designed to develop
employees into skilled operators who can support all stages of the milling
process. Placement within the progression will be based on the candidate’s
completed Ministry training modules. Through hands‑on training, competency
development, and gradually increasing responsibilities, operators learn to
safely operate equipment, monitor plant performance, and support day‑to‑day
production activities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follow all safety procedures, wear required PPE and participate in hazard reporting.
- Perform routine equipment checks, inspections, and housekeeping in assigned areas.
- Assist with mill start-ups, shutdowns, and basic troubleshooting under guidance.
- Monitor process conditions and report any abnormalities to the supervisor.
- Operate equipment and circuits as training progresses.
- Support material handling activities, including shoveling, lifting, and cleaning as required.
- Perform simple process adjustments as permitted by competency level.
- Communicate effectively with operators, maintenance, and supervisors to maintain safe and steady production.
- Participate in scheduled training, cross‑training, and competency evaluations to progress through levels.
- Assist in isolations and lockout/tagout procedures as authorized by training.
- Safely respond and manage emergencies involving operating equipment.
- Maintain a clean work environment to support safe and efficient mill operations.
- Provide support to other operators and contribute to team‑based problem solving.
- Work in a healthy work environment with full support, cooperation and commitment to satisfy our operation’s goal of being accident-free.
- Comply with federal and provincial acts and regulations, and legal requirements.
- Adhere to all relevant corporate policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- MTCU Basic Mill Operator Common Core or ability to obtain.
- Previous experience in mining, industrial, or processing environments is an asset.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license.
- Legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) training is an asset.
- Ability to learn and follow standard operating procedures and safety protocols.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn how equipment and circuits operate.
- Physically able to perform labour‑intensive tasks, including lifting, climbing, standing, and working in varied weather conditions.
- Comfortable working in a noisy, fast‑paced, and safety‑sensitive environment.
- Basic computer skills for completing logs, training modules, and production data entry.
- Reliable, punctual, and able to maintain consistent attendance.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and operational needs.
- Willingness to participate in training, including MTCU modules and competency‑based progression requirements.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
- The role is located at the Redstone Mill, which is approximately 35 kilometers southeast of Timmins, Ontario, Canada.
- This posting is for an existing role at Gowest.
- The ideal candidate for the role will work a 5-5-4 rotation, 12 hours shifts.
- Although you will be assigned a work schedule, this is not a guaranteed schedule of hours, and your work hours may vary with the needs of the company.
