Duties
• Direct and co-ordinate work as Operator in Charge (OIC) with an assigned crew based upon work assignment prepared by the Supervisor;
• Operate and complete maintenance on water distribution system such valve, hydrants, water line tapping, removing snow around hydrants, repair of water line, and other related work as directed by the Supervisor;
• Operate and complete maintenance on sewer collection system such as repairing manhole and catch basin structures, and repair of sewer line, and other related work as directed by the Supervisor;
• Operate water and sewer related industry equipment, including but not limited to hydraulic vacuum and flushing truck, the tapping machine, and other equipment required by the Department;
• Conduct pre and post inspection checks and perform routine maintenance on the equipment in accordance with approved check list and maintenance programs;
• Ensure that equipment is kept in clean condition as required and report any malfunction;
• Ensure that the work is completed and equipment is operated in a safe, efficient, effective and responsible manner, and in accordance with all Legislation, and Department Standard Operating Procedures;
• Report any non-conformances, hazards or operational problems associated with the operation;
• Maintain accurate records of works undertaken and respond to two-way radio when assistance required;
• Carry out weekend water and sewer on call duties on a rotational basis;
• Carry out work on assigned shift schedules;
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
Qualifications
• Grade 12 diploma;
• Must possess and maintain at minimum a valid Class 1 Water Distribution and Supply subsystem operator’s certificate (Ontario Regulation 128/04) and minimum a valid Class 1 wastewater collection facility operator’s licence (Ontario Regulation 129/04);
• Must have a minimum of two (2) years of experience in water/wastewater operations.
• Applicant must possess a valid Ontario Driver’s Licence, Class “DZ”;
• Leadership qualities required to direct, co-ordinate, and work with an assigned crew;
• Demonstrated skills, knowledge and ability to operate multiple pieces of industry related equipment;
• Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated;
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions and compile reports;
• Ability to work on various shift and weekend rotational shift;
• Good knowledge of the names and locations of City streets is necessary;
• Ability to lift and work with heavy objects such as manhole covers, frames, and industry related materials;
• Demonstrated ability to safely carry out repairs to water, sewer, and storm system;
• Demonstrated knowledge and ability to operate components of a water, sewer and storm system;
• Demonstrated knowledge and ability to operate thawing machines and leak detection equipment.
